Effective with the Fall 2007 Semester, Maui Community College Students will be assessed a Technology Fee for the purpose of funding student-centric campus technology. This fund was approved by the University of Hawai`i Board of Regents, the Associated Students of MCC (ASMCC), the MCC Executive Committee, and the MCC Technical Support Committee.

The driving impetus behind the Technology Fee is the increasing demand for state-of-the-art equipment in MCC's classrooms, laboratories, and campus. In addition to the equipment, the supporting infrastructure must be capable of meeting the ever-growing demands placed upon it by more and more equipment. The Technology Fee will help pay for classroom and laboratory computers and software, infrastructure such as campus wi-fi, and other classroom technology.

While the fundamental responsibility for funding the campus technological infrastructure rests with the University of Hawai`i, it became increasingly clear that a significant gap existed between allocated funding and campus needs. This gap broadened with the growing expectations of students (and faculty) for cutting-edge technology. Class content delivery by means of streaming audio/video, PDF repositories, web content, and other modalities became the norm. Clearly, the existing infrastructure was inadequate, and anticipated funding would not close the gap between reality and expectations.

With bold and visionary action, the MCC Student Government (ASMCC) endorsed the concept of a Technology Fee. With the fee's proceeds strictly limited to funding only student computing needs, it is anticipated that MCC's technology will be the envy of every other UH campus. Fee receipts will be placed in a dedicated account, which will be governed by a committee consisting of MCC students, faculty, and technical staff. The total fee charged to each student is capped at twelve credits, so the individual burden is clearly limited to a predetermined amount.
